OPPORTUNITES AT BOOK BUNK IN 2023
BACKGROUND:
Book Bunk’s library restoration work is centred on these pillars:
- Experiential: We transform what people do at the library. We believe that these spaces can continue to nurture academic and literary pursuits, while also providing a home for diverse and accessible programmes and events that are free from political or religious agenda and that celebrate art, well being and learning.
- Architectural: We coordinate the physical renovation of these spaces while ensuring their historical integrity is maintained and showcased. We’re also committed to ensuring the communities living around these spaces are the primary beneficiaries of each of these projects.
- Social: We want to create ‘Palaces for The People’; public, inclusive and safe spaces where Nairobi’s residents can access whatever they need be it legal advise, tax education, or a neutral space to commune and network. This, in a bid to explore what public space really means in this city.
- Digital: We’re working to introduce technology into every aspect of these libraries: access control, collections management, online catalogues as well as digital skills training for librarians and library users. We want the digital lives of these libraries to match that of the digital possibilities of Nairobi.
We deliver our interventions through collaboration with individuals from across industries and sectors for the benefit of public libraries and their users. We are currently planning our 2023 programmes, events and research endeavours and are recruiting individuals and organisations to work with us in 2023 in a variety of ways.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMES
- HEPA JAM: Hepa Jam offers extended library hours to library users and keeps the library open until 8pm and 4pm on select weekdays and Saturdays respectively. During these hours users can access a range of arts and play based programmes as well as help with their homework/ academic pursuits. In 2023 we are expanding this programme to include skills development programmes
- NBO LITFEST: This is a literature festival that is anchored in Nairobi’s public libraries and featuring stories and ideas emerging from Nairobi and other regional spaces. It is a celebration of public libraries as spaces for art, culture, and knowledge production. This is the second edition of the festival and the first time we host it in person! The festival will take place in Nairobi from August 25th to 27th 2023.
- THE MISSING BITS: This is a project inspired by the gaps we discovered in the archives of the McMillan Memorial Library. Our 2022 edition added crowdsourced reflections of Kenya’s past and present on to the existing archive. In 2023, we are calling out for stories and materials from those who used the McMillan Library between 1930 and 1990.
- ART BUNK: In 2023, this programme will deliver a week long visual arts programme to young library users and will also graffiti the perimeter wall of the Eastlands Library
LIBRARY ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH: This research project works with local guides to conduct detailed research into the number and state of Kenya’s libraries. We’ve completed research into 13 counties and look towards completed the other 34 in 2023.
